Sorry if it sounds like a feature request but now that we are talking about FFmpeg
If its included in the FRD (embeded or linked via an external binary) Can it be made to support certain CLI arguments?

Case in point: some flv files are very big
say a 400mb flv may have 150mb video + 250mb audio ( I mean very high bitrate of audio, bundled with average video )
For me I can even live with 32kbps aac audio converted with Nero codec
For FFmpeg maybe 48kbps aac is good

Can we pass arguments like video is taken untouched and audio is compressed (if the user specifies certain audio bitrate himself) ?

I can do it with external tools.. but if FFmpeg is included in FRD it will automate the process

FFmpeg has another advantage, IIRC FLV doesnt have subs
If a site offers FLV but with external subs that render via its online custom player, FRD may use FFmpeg to mux FLV to MP4 or MKV with subs as a single file.. that means less cluttered hard drive

I know someone may suggest FFmpeg has lots of options just enable them all.. but the thing is we cannot turn FRD into a complete tool audio / video converting suite.. we have to balance it otherwise the code might be too much to manage.

For advanced users, media manipulation automation issue hardly matters, they already have solutions for that. My use case for example: to convert all FLV files to MP4 in folder is just a matter of clicking shortcut/context menu in the folder (content), the same with muxing DASH files, etc.

Yes, it would be nice if the various use cases automated by plugins. But how many users will use the feature?

@honey_ami

I, too, agree with you that FRD shouldn't be turned into an all-in-one media suite;
after all, it's a mere downloader...
However, among the hundreds of plugins it supports, a great bunch of them generate
media (video/audio) files, which makes the ffmpeg consideration all the more valid...
(i.e. not just for use with the youtube plugin to address the WebM files...).
I simply mentioned the YTVAD firefox addon to illustrate the way its authors dealt
with remuxing DASH youtube streams through FFmpeg integration...
My suggestion for remuxing downloaded FLV & TS files was meant as a global
(not per plugin) optional feature, more as an added benefit should the devs ever
decide to implement FFmpeg integration...
As a semi-advanced media user, I do prefer the way FRD fetches standalone
.srt files - I can edit those subs files further with specialized software and then
choose to optionally embed to the Matroska container via mkvtoolnix...

@tong2shot

What is an advanced user?
All of us started as novices, but further down the line we acquired knowledge
as the software we are using gets more complex, according to Lehman's laws
of software evolution; "user effort is needed to maintain mastery of its content and
behaviour to achieve satisfactory evolution."
A user who just likes everything served ready to eat in a plate in front of him/her
is - if you want my humble opinion - a deficit for the programme. If an update must
be made that requires some additional familiarisation, so be it; that is what Release
Notes / Use Guides are for; if a new feature is then made known, expect more users
to take advantage of it...

Does FRD support those? If not, could you post an example link? smiling smiley

Hi ntoskrnl smiling smiley

What I meant there was "other YT downloaders"
in the form of Firefox addons - not a reference to FRD.
VEVO (and other music) videos are especially protected
by You Tube to hinder download, in order to combat piracy
and to stick to rights agreements with the Music Industry
in general...
I am sure you already know, but you can read more about
VEVO videos protection at:

[superuser.com]

Many YT downloaders (browser addons or standalone apps)
opt out from VEVO, because Google (owner of youtube)
has a tendency for hunting them down, at least in the US...

YES it does! thumbs up smiley

Always grateful for keeping FRD up-to-date thumbs up

A serious problem with the latest version of the plugin reported on this forum as In FRD 0.9u4 YouTube.com plugin v 2.9.5 fails to mux a large .m4v & .m4a.
