Error - winsec.exe - esrver.net - proxy settings
August 16, 2015 04:55PM
Hi,

The virus winsec.exe, which hijacks your net connection and routes all of your net traffic thru esrver.net, was removed from my computer.
After removing the virus and all of its residual files, FRD gives me the following error
"Internet connection is not probably available. Please check your proxy settings".
But I don't have a proxy setting.
I have tested the security with GRC.com's "Shields UP" and that all checks out.
I can get to the net -- IOW ftp, firefox, thunderbird, etc. all work.
However, FRD does not.

Seriously need some help.

Options > Use Connections > Make sure "Default" is checked.

If that doesn't help, could you attach the log file? Help > Browse to log file.

Thank you for the help.

UnknownHostException indicates some sort of DNS issue.

It's weird that other programs work but FRD doesn't. I'm not sure what to do. Can you open CMD, run "nslookup wordrider.net" without quotes and post the output?

C:\Users\Ghost>nslookup wordrider.net
Server: *************
Address: ***.***.*.*

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: wordrider.net - my IP was given
Addresses: my address was given

Which do you think it is, FRD or Java?

What Win7 services are required for FRD to function?
IOW, if Volume Shadow Copy (aka the 'secret recycle bin') is disabled, can FRD still fuction?

Judging on the nslookup results, this is definitely some sort of a DNS configuration issue on your computer. I'm just wondering how any programs at all can access the internet. I'm not sure what's wrong or how you could fix it.

If the OP can post the comments on this board using the same machine, then I think it's not DNS problem. It's probably antivirus/firewall issue. Make sure FRD is in antivirus/firewall whitelists.

Yes, I am using the same machine to post comments on this board that FRD refuses to fuction upon.
Before the virus, Java 8 (updates turned off) and FRD were in good working order.
And yes, FRD was, as you put it, "whitelisted" with the firewall and was not a problem with the AV program.
Last night, I completely unstalled FRD, unstalled Java 8, and cleaned the registry.
Then I reinstalled Java 8 and FRD, in that order.
I tested my net connection with firefox and got my e-mail.
I also ran a speed test with [speedof.me]
The connect was as fast as it was before the virus.
I know this to be true because I keep weekly speed results for net connection.
Next, I turned off the firewall and the antivirus program (set to turn back on in 10 minute, if something went wrong), started FRD, and the error was still...
"Internet connection is not probably available.
Please check your proxy settings."

Now that everyone is up to speed on the problem and returning to my previous question,
What Win7 services are required for FRD to function?
Example - if Volume Shadow Copy (aka the 'secret recycle bin') is disabled, can FRD still fuction?
IOW, the virus could have turned off one of the 50+ win7 services and it could be a simple matter of turning it back on again to get FRD working.

FRD/Java doesn't require any services as far as I know.

If even nslookup doesn't return the correct results (it should return 212.20.102.77 for wordrider.net), the problem is not within FRD or Java.
