I very much doubt it 8-)
System requirements don't change with minor updates
(security fixes for the same major release, i.e. 7).

As I said, I was not being personal and just shared my thoughts
on that, with the very limited info you provided...
Be sure I was not kidding!
FWIW, I had win7 32bit installed on a 2004 bought desktop,
AMD Athlon single core CPU, RAM 1024MB DDR(v1)
(originally 512MB, extended later to 2x512MB DDR), and OS runs
reasonably well... You can disable Aero and other features
to minimise the need for resources...
You can even find Win 7 Starter x86 versions on the net,
that are made for netbooks and ATOM processors, so
they require very little resources...

I empathise with your printer/scanner driver issues;
consider yourself lucky they are still functional!
I had a HP AIO bought in 2010 that is now completely dead!

If you have a way to backup your current setup,
please give the installation of a newer OS a chance!
You may even find that your hardware could work
with the provided Windows drivers instead of the HP ones!

I am writing this in a 2008 TOSHIBA laptop that came with
Vista (no SPs originally!) - MS will EOL VistaSP2 in April of 2016!
Already many Software/Hardware manufacturers are
limiting/excluding support for Vista - this is the way things
work in the IT business!
Today, it may be just "MEGA" for you; with time, other
sites may cease to work!
I remember I had to update to Java 7 (from 6) after a
crucial update in the hulu plugin (subs only now), that
was only Java 7 compatible...
As FRD progresses, many of its functions will require
newer Java versions...
I am facing the same issue with my old WinXP-SP2 box
(I can't install SP3 for... some reason); more and more
new apps are built with .NET Framework 4, which is
unavailable for SP2, so they do not run!
In the end, I have to agree with ntoskrnl; perhaps it's time
to start saving up for a replacement box;
refurbished WinXP-SP3/Vista-SP2 desktops could be
found in my country for as little as 120 Euros!

Please don't tell us you're surprised that your 15-year-old hardware and software are incompatible with current websites and programs. Technology moves forward and has done so for the last 40 years. Actually, you should probably be happy that your computer lasted so long, because your computer is probably more useful now than a 1982 Commodore 64 was when it was 15 years old.

A proper computer is not expensive. I built a new computer for my parents in 2012 to replace their old one from 2003. It has an Intel dual core processor, 4GB of memory, and an SSD, yet it only cost 300€. I used a free Windows 8 student license, but a pirated copy would work just as well. A computer like this is good for another 10 years. 30€ per year is not expensive.

Printers and scanners are a nightmare though, particularly the cheap ones. I don't even have a printer because they are so crap. I just do all my printing at university or work.

And is not there are ANY workaround? Eg. using 3rd party SSL library or something like that?
And what works on Windows XP SP 1.0a? Telling me what works on system that I cannot use (SP3) is not helping at all.

Machine is used only for download / scan / print. Scanning drivers are flakey HP crap, likely not working on SP2 or SP3. Known to cause troubles. So for some stupid (MEGAstupid) Mega move I'm not going to buy new scanner, new PC and install new OS. That is insane.

The last publicly available version of Java 6 RE was update 45:

It was EOL'd (for not paid users) in April 2013! ::o

The latest available version of Java 7 RE is update 75:

from your system; I have and old box with WinXP SP2

UPDATING JAVA RE IS NEVER A STUPID THING TO DO!!!!

What is indeed pretty stupid and infantile (td) (no personal insult meant here,
I just want to stress the importance of this) is keeping a 3 years old outdated
version of Java, with more security holes (that have been made public after
each successive update) than a piece of Swiss cheese...:X
Deprecated, vulnerable installations of Java RE is a major cause of
adware/spyware/virus infections in Windows OSes!(td)(td)(td)

Your best choice after Java 7 is EOL'd is to move to at least
Win7 (there are slimmed down versions of it floating on the net
that you could install in a VM) which supports Java 8;
or unistall v7 completely and switch to another downloader not
built on Java...

Using a very old Win OS (is it because of the TCP/IP restrictions
that came with SP2?) together with an extremely outdated
version of Java to connect to the web is an ACCIDENT waiting
to happen! :S

Java 6 is so old that it does not support the HTTPS version required by Mega. A minimum of Java 7 is required.

Yep, I was not updating Java all the time... is that necessary? W/o this update the Mega is not going to work? Damn...

I have Java version 6, update 15 (build 1.6.0_15-b03) and it refuse itself to update, so this is the final version I could ever get. I tried to downloading new Java install, but it won't run. Online install did not run at all, offline install says: "The procedure entry point DecodePointer could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll" and that it is.

No update for me at all.

Windows XP SP 1.0a is used that and I use FRD to _NOT_ need updating my browsers and OS so often. I could download on Linux from Mega, but that is very lame, is not it? So, since everything worked before perfectly - what is the problem NOW to require some stupid Java update, just to keep things working, that already worked well before...?

I guess we'll eventually have to fix this in any other plugins that rely on special characters like '!' as well.
