... This is just a frontend for youtube-dl; make sure you have updated it to latest version (2019.07.02), most everything else is configurable via the GUI (see attachment) ...

If you did not specify an output directory (output "filename" via the -o switch), then. by default, the video will be downloaded in the same directory where youtube-dl.exe is foun

Sure enough, your non-music youtube video does play natively in latest VLC 3.0.7.1-x86
The fact is them Google people (owners of youtube) have, once again, CHANGED recently their "page" code to cripple downloading scripts/software, each one to varying degree...

Youtube changed their policy to prevent music videos from being played by third parties (VLC).
You'll notice that any random video that isn't a music video can still be played.
The end of an era has come my friend.

First, load the link in question in your browser:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/chinese/features/lingohack/ep-181227
Then, with the aid of your browser's context menu entries, load Page Source; then search for string data-pid; it is located in an XML block like the following:
Language: XML<div class="widget widget-video widget-video-standard" data-widget-index="5"

The breakage is caused by two BBC (Radio) changes:
1. Several months ago they started using ProgrammeIDs (PIDs) beginning with the letter m, while prior to that (mostly) only PIDs starting with either b or p were used (and are supported in current FRD iPlayer plugin).
EDIT: For BBC World Service Radio, PIDs starting with the letter w and with a string length that can go as high as 16 were

Apologies, but I am really struggling to grasp the exact nature of your issue...
Is it a specific variant/resolution you want to download from
and you're not getting it?
I will speak only about the MP4 container compatible streams @30FPS, as these are the most popular...
360p is available both as a standalone stream and as DASH streams, in that case FRD prefers the former one; like you s

Windows only user here; on Win OSes, it should be extracted
inside the "tools" dir of FRD, not the "plugins" one

BBC iPlayer links are now by default using HTTPS protocol; I suspect current bbc.frd only supports non-secure, i.e. plain, links. bbc.frd is @tong2shot's child; we haven't heard from him in 4 months
I imagine the transition to HTTPS will be a simple task for the one remaining active developer (@birchie), but if major breakage takes place (very probable with what's been going on lately over at

... If you load your sample link in a browser (Firefox in my case), it redirects to

Using this (proper) Youtube URI, video downloads fine in FRD

Unfortunately, the FRD dev (@tong2shot) responsible for the cbs.com plugin
hasn't made an appearance in this forum for weeks ; I suspect he has his reasons;
this is a freeware/donationware app, devs offer support if/when they're able to...
In the meantime, other solutions are available to you
E.g. you can use the excellent Python CLI app called youtube-

Until the plugin is fixed, you can
1. On Mozilla Firefox install the following addon:
https://addons.mozilla.org/el/firefox/addon/hls-stream-detector/
2. Make sure you have the Adobe Flash NPAPI plugin installed in your system and enabled in Firefox
3. Load your sample URL in F

The ITV plugin being currently broken has nothing to do with the requirement to provide login credentials in their browser API.

You need to run frd.jar with latest JRE 8 from the terminal or change the default java on your Mac;
though a bit technical, please read and experiment...
EDIT: Some useful links for Mac users from Oracle:
It may be necessary to install full JDK8 rather than simply JRE8...
To rule out the premium RG plugin is at fault, you might want to try it in a friend's/relative's compute

With all due respect, can you provide exact answers to the exact questions posed by both devs?
If you're not willing to co-operate, then please stop whining and wasting valuable dev time, especially
during the summer when people deserve to take a break...
Even your latest log excerpt is just a "regurgitation" of what you've already posted, adding little new to the picture!

Previous plugin used the legacy RTMP streams;
in these streams, HD is supplied as a 720p25fps encode.
In the past week or so, much of the HD RTMP (or flash)
streams were corrupted, resulting in only partial downloads.
