youtube plugin problems
December 01, 2018 07:25PM
the problems are mainly the same as the listed in the previous post by other member today, regarding the error "player js not found", which is only overcome by resuming download many times until download runs, and the most notable problem is that 480p, 720p and above qualities are not available for most of the videos. in the previous post it was suggested to enable "dash streams" option in youtube's plugin option, which worked only for the given link in this post, but for the most of the videos the problem remains, like here in this link:

it was said that youtube withdrew all the 480p+ quality streams for copyrighted content, does that mean there is no way to get around that problem?

Hello mina smiling smiley

> the problems are mainly the same as the listed in the previous post by other member today

... It is considered bad "netiquette" to open duplicate issues... You should've posted in the already opened one...

> regarding the error "player js not found", which is only overcome by resuming download many times until download runs

I won't say I've never had that issue happen on me on youtube, but it's very infrequent... winking smiley; are you on the very latest Java version (8u191 or 8u192) for your OS and architecture? I am afraid I'm not able to offer a permanent remedy for this; a dev has to identify the cause of it and fix it with new code...

> and the most notable problem is that 480p, 720p and above qualities are not available for most of the videos

> it was said that youtube withdrew all the 480p+ quality streams for copyrighted content

What I said was that only the standalone (one combined video+audio stream) MP4 encodes (video codec = avc1[aka h264], audio codec = aac) with a video resolution > 360p were withdrawn for copyrighted content (e.g. VEVO music clips), not that higher resolution variants (>=720p) are not made available for such copyrighted material; they are, most of the time, but provided in the MPEG-DASH format (as two separate video and audio streams).

If you load your youtube video in a recent browser and click the settings cog wheel => quality, you should be able to inspect all available qualities, e.g. for your referenced link:

FRD can't fetch what is not available by YT itself; for the above clip, you do see the highest quality variant is at 720p; that might either be the standalone encode, or a DASH video stream (or both); if you notice FRD does not fetch the 720p encode by default, that means you'll have to enable the DASH streams in FRD's yt plugin, as instructed in original post...

For completeness, I have no issue here fetching the standalone 720p variant for that clip you mentioned:

thank you for your reply. but here are exactly what happens when i download the above link using different qualities, 360, 480, 720 (changing it every trial from youtube plugin options):
1. 360p-> download size is 51.53mb
2. 480p-> one m4v file downloaded with size 17.51mb and one m4a file downloaded with size 20.91mb
3. 720p-> download size is 50.56mb, which is the same as yours

>>For completeness, I have no issue here fetching the standalone 720p variant for that clip you mentioned:
as you notice the 720p has smaller or almost the same size as the 360p! and this is quite obvious in the downladed video, it looks like it has 360 quality. and I tried that for many other videos

>>are you on the very latest Java version (8u191 or 8u192) for your OS and architecture?
honestly i don't think so, i'm gonna update it, but as u can see though the problem i talked about still remains, since u downloaded the 720 with the same size as mine 50.56mb

Apologies, but I am really struggling to grasp the exact nature of your issue...
Is it a specific variant/resolution you want to download from [www.youtube.com]
and you're not getting it?
I will speak only about the MP4 container compatible streams @30FPS, as these are the most popular...

360p is available both as a standalone stream and as DASH streams, in that case FRD prefers the former one; like you said, file size is 51.53 MB; here is its MediaInfo log:

480p isn't available as standalone, only as DASH streams (which should be thus enabled, along with the internal muxer); be advised that Youtube are recently throttling considerably the speed of elementary DASH streams (in order to thwart downloaders), so you'll notice diminished speeds with DASH streams...angry smiley When the two streams have finished downloading (in my case, it took 16min!), they'll be muxed (packaged) into a single MP4 file, sized 38.5 MiB; here is its MediaInfo log:

Your specific video isn't available in higher resolutions (> 720p).

If you're just wondering why the 480p file is smaller (in size) than the 360p one and, likewise, why the 720p one is smaller (again,in size) than the 360p one, too, this is because a media file's size is primarily dictated by the overall bitrate, not by the dimensions (i.e. resolution) of its video part:
360p
Overall bit rate : 313 kb/s
480p
Overall bit rate : 234 kb/s
720p
Overall bit rate : 307 kb/s

A simple online search for media containers/files or even a visit to one of the many dedicated audio-video forums would have answered that one for you... And if you're in the habit of substantial YouTube downloading, there exist (sorry to say that) better downloading tools, with a special focus on youtube and friends...

To conclude, yes, the youtube plugin is in need of an overhaul, to combat the recent youtube inflicted changes (especially the speed throttling issue), but in its current state it's still usable for most intents and purposes winking smiley

It's not working for me either. I think YouTube changed something, because my YouTube Center plugin can't grab HD videos anymore, it can only download 360p. In the mean time use 9xbuddy, it still works for the time being.
